Our free paper runs a "best chippy" competition. I think the chip shop in our area won it in 2011. Can't stand their chips myself, and the ceiling is dirty with dusty cobwebs, I'm worried bits will drop down on to the food.
I think it's a bit like the Eurovision Song Contest or X-Factor in that an orchestrated voting campaign decides the outcome, regardless of who is actually best.
The best chippies are probably now ust in our memories. When I was at school, we used to go to one English chippy to get a tray of chips, then go to the Chinese nearby to get their gravy put on. The English chippies' gravy was like dish water. Ugh!
As far as I am concerned, the best chippy on this area of stockpier is actually a Chinese. also the quality dropped when they stopped using lard. my mum-in-law still uses lard and the chips are brilliant. sorry veggies

The Choughworld award will be judged by an esteemed panel of chip lovers. It will be a bit like 'Masterchef', but for Chips.
Delete'an esteemed panel' - you mean your family?

ReplyDeleteChoughworld is open to all. As long as it sells chips, it's a chippy.
DeleteIf you want lardy chips, try popping over to Whitby.
My mother-in-laws is nearer, but agreed Whitby sells decent chips, as do most chippies in Newcastle
