    1. yes it has,

I love the comment 'We’ve taken the advice you’ve given us on reader surveys' - anyone remember being surveyed

    3. There doesn't seem to be much comment on the new site, which I think was the intention reading between the lines.

It's as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.

I'll miss pointing out where the journalists have misquoted from wikipedia most of all.

    4. On the northerner the MD was explaining, reading between the lines, he was loosing revenue because of some of the companies spending advertising did not like the obnoxios comments being posted

    5. I have a lot of sympathy for the MEN trying to tame the message boards. They always had a reputation as a bit of a 'bear pit', which is why I liked posting there.

There was another theory that they also posted provocative stories to get a reaction, and drive advertising revenue (like the Daily Moan did with that story about the woman who was too beautiful). It probably backfired.

The problem probably was that the posts were more lively, and in many cases much better informed than the stories, as many of us had more experience of copying and pasting from Wikipedia than the journalists did.

What is sad though, is that the message boards were a true reflection of Mancunians. A bit gobby, prone to speaking without thinking and not really caring what other people thought of them as long as they got to express a sincerely held view, however stupid. The letters page of the MEN in the pre-digital age was always like that and I think they've ended something special. Might not be a bad thing though.

  4. I guess, give it time, the MEN posts will revert back to the old ways where people will be posting their views without a care, especially as people learn they can hide their identities on facebook.

'Bear pit' - that is why I signed up, could have a real 'knock them down with logic' discussion. I was reading for quite a while without posting comments, because I wanted to research those commentators it was wort replying to.

    1. One of the themes I had with City Centre was his over reliance on reason. I see it as one tool in the armoury, more as a feint as it never really delivers the killer blow.

There's a real truth to the saying that you don't have to prove yourself right, just the other person wrong. Which is bad but true.

Generally though I've learnt a lot about human nature, and not got myself punched!

    3. You know people often comment on this strange anomaly in real life, but it never happens. I don't know how I get away with it either. I think the sense that people think I might just be joking saves me most times.

  5. The new layout's bobbins - Bordering on unreadable.

    1. Two phrases spring to mind - "Trying to be clever but failing" and "Keep it simple, stupid".

    2. Yes, agreed, the new format doesn't allow indenting of replies so you can follow a thread. Also, is it me or what, is there less actual news stories than there used to be?

    3. Oh and by the way, I am not just having a pop at MEN because of Facebook, it really is annoying trying to follow comments on the site
